The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
