Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This
As any significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
