The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
